Saturday 4 June

The special theme for Saturday is the Public Organ, and the organ for young people. The showcase here is the open day at the Town Hall, and we expect congress attendees will hang around for a while to take part in the activities, interact with the public and get ideas for how you can raise the profile of the organ and its music.

In the morning you can also to attend one of the workshops. “Pipes in the Band” and “Getting the Voices Back” cover two aspects of involving a wider range of people, especially young people, in church music. The two-part “New Approaches to Old Music” (you can attend either or both parts) focusses on organ technique and musicianship, with insights applicable to small or large pipe organs.

Sunday 5 June

Sunday fittingly showcases the organ in the church. We begin with a birthday celebration for the George Croft pipe organ in Pitt St Methodist church, which was inaugurated 9th June 1911 - almost exactly 100 years earlier, in the week following King George V's birthday. In the afternoon not one but two organs feature in the Widor Mass, with choirs especially formed for this event. This Mass is dedicated to the casualties of the 22 Feb 2011 earthquake in Christchurch. We end the day with the traditional Congress Dinner, this year celebrating the Golden Jubilee of ORGANZ, the New Zealand Association of Organists.
