ORGANZ Performance Award won by Nicholas Sutcliffe
The ORGANZ Performance Award 2011 has been won at the national Jubilee Congress by Auckland University final year harpsichord student and Dilworth School organist, Nicholas Sutcliffe. He won the verdict from adjudicator Sarah Kim (Paris) with his playing of ‘Pièce héroique’ by César Franck. A former organ scholar at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Nicholas later became Organist and Director of Music at St Mark's Anglican Church, Remuera, a position he has recently left. A strong bass singer, he has sung in a number of top choirs and was formerly bass section leader of the New Zealand Youth Choir. As first prize winner he takes the Alan Hewson Memorial Trophy and $1,000 cash.
Second prize $700 cash went to Simon Mace, formerly of New Plymouth and now Acting Organist at St Paul's Anglican Cagthedral, Dunedin. He is currently studying organ performance at the University of Otago under David Burchell and was formerly Organ Scholar at The Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary, New Plymouth. Simon's competition piece was ‘Praeludium, Fuga and Ciacona’ by Buxtehude.
A encouragement prize of $300 was awarded to Helen Shearer (New Plymouth) for her performance of 'Prière à Notre-Dame’ from Léon Böellmann's Suite Gothique.
