Description

"The Spirit Within", a new cantata by Colin Gibson, is to be premiered at St Barnabas Church, Christchurch on Sunday 24 August under the direction of Denis Guyan.

In it the Dunedin-based Gibson, a professor of English and prolific composer of hymns, tells of the God, the majestic and awe-inspiring, whose Spirit surprises us in our dreams or in a flash of light. He also provokes us to respond to poverty and injustice.

Gibson’s music draws on both classical and popular traditions: his poetic texts set us firmly in our own New Zealand rural and urban landscapes.

This new cantata, a large-scale work of about 25 minutes, features soprano and tenor soloists, readers, choir, string quartet, piano and organ plus congregation. All the readings and lyrics are by established New Zealand poets.  It is as yet unpublished but a CD “Spirited People” produced by Wellington’s Festival Singers, called , contains the cantata and other works.

Artists: Virginia Nichols – soprano, Jeremy Baker – tenor, Russell Kent – piano & organ, String Quartet from Christchurch School of Music, augmented St Barnabas Parish Choir, conductor – Denis Guyan.
