Description

You are invited to share in a Pot Luck tea in the new Community Room at St Andrews in the City.  There will also be an opportunity to view and play the re-installed organ in its new spacious gallery.   John Hargraves, Director of the South Island Organ Company, will be present during that week working on tonal finishing and fine tuning before the opening of the complex on Sunday 15th February.   In 1978 John completed work on the restoration of what was St Andrew’s ‘identical twin’ organ in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch.  The organs were built by Halmshaw and Son, Birmingham. The St Andrew’s organ (formerly from First Church, Otago) was built in 1871 and the Christchurch organ in 1878.  Although the organ at St Andrews has been electrified and altered a great deal, a lot of the original character still remains.  How much remains will be revealed by John Hargraves during the evening.  It will be interesting to hear him discuss comparisons as he has intimate knowledge of the firm’s work.
