Description

Jacinta Jacovcevic, organist and director of music of St Marys Catholic Cathedral Perth WA, will play a concert at Sacred Heart Basilica during a visit to Timaru.

She is in New Zealand to review progress on the two organs that the Timaru-based South Island Organ Company is currently building for the Cathedral. Installation is scheduled for later this year as soon as the Cathedral building project is ready. The 3/71 west gallery organ is based on the Cathedral’s 1910 Dodd instrument relocated from its 1963 transept location. The 2/17 Chancel organ is based on a 1905 Hobday instrument that SIOC have had in storage for many years. The two organs each with its own mobile console will be linked by a Peterson computer system.

Description

The organ in Timaru's architecturally impressive Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a 2 manual and pedal, 26 rank 1912 Hobday which was restored by the South Island Organ Company in 1986.

The New Zealand Historic Place Trust describes the Basilica as follows:

Designed by FW Petre, the basilica was constructed in 1910-11. With its twin towers and cupola of copper the building is a very significant feature of the Timaru streetscape and one of the most notable examples of ecclesiastical architecture in New Zealand.

The semi-circular colonnade of 13 graceful Corinthian columns representing St Paul and the twelve apostles in the interior is particularly eye-catching. The floor of the sanctuary is decorated with mosaic tiles and there are many striking stained glass windows.
