Description
Situated in the village shopping centre of Mt Eden, Auckland, on the corner of Ngauruhoe and Mt Eden Roads. The church was built in 1899/1900 in timber Gothic style. Now managed by a Community Trust the property has recently been extensively renovated in a restoration and redevelopment project in partnership with Auckland City for use as a community centre. It continues to be owned by the Methodist Church.
The present organ, 2 manual with 22 speaking stops, is the 3rd instrument to be installed in this church. The first also built by G Croft in 1916, was moved in 1932 to Takapuna Methodist, to be replaced by a 1927 Croft instrument from St Paul’s Methodist Remuera, which in turn was moved to St Michael’s Anglican Wellington in 1951.
The current organ was built by George Croft & Son in 1954, rebuilt in 1976 and again in 1980. It has now been retuned to concert pitch, restored and sympathetically modified by the South Island Organ Co. to enhance the new facility. It is surprisingly complete, there being no extensions other than to the pedals in this 2 manual instrument of 7 Great stops, 9 on the Swell and 6 on the pedal.
