Description

The original organ at St Matthew's, Hastings, was built in 1908 by Norman & Beard, England, and installed at the back of the church ina choir gallery. After the church was extended in 1914 the organ was placed in the present chamber. It was donated by J N Williams and William Nelson.

It was rebuilt and extended in 1996 by Kenneth Aplin Organs, providing an instrument suitable for accompanying services and the presentation of major choral and organ works. The rebuild included cleaning, releathering, new wiring, new console and keyboards, additional casework, new solid state coupling and switching mechanism. The extension enlarged the organ from 17 speaking stops (from 15 ranks of pipes and 756 pipes) to 34 speaking stops and 1395 pipes. The rebuild was generously supported by the community and the Lotteries Commission.
